Sewage Sludge
Like most waste materials, sewage sludge can be viewed as a problem - or an opportunity. It can be processes by:
anaerobic digestion to produce a fuel gas called biogas;
combusted with energy recovery to generate power; or
dried and, if the heavy metal content is sufficiently low, used as a fertiliser.
Partial drying to around 30% dry solids is needed before combustion can be self-sustaining. Fluidised bed systems are generally used for municipal or industrial sludge combustion.
